Description
Indigenous people used the thorns to lance boils, for ear piercing and to make fish hooks. The thorns also offer added protection to small animals hiding within its branches. Crataegus is from the Greek word “kratos”, which means strength. This refers to the durability of the wood. Hawthorn, the common name, arose from the Anglo-Saxon word “haguthorn” which translates to “a fence with thorns”.
