Description
The Aster family is an extensive one with plants covering many habitats, colours, sizes and traits. This means there should be at least one Aster that suits every person’s individual tastes! The Fringed Aster, as its name suggests, has “fringed” leaves that are slightly serrated. The light purple flowers with yellow centers appear later than many other species (August through September) which provides a nicely staggered late supply of nectar and pollen for many pollinators. As long as it receives some moisture, it is fairly adaptable, growing in semi shaded woodlands to grassy meadows, but it does not like to be completely “naked” in the sun. It is content in a large container but likes to spread its roots so don’t force it into small spaces or it will remain stunted and fail to flower.
