Description

A member of the mint family, this hardy plant is naturalized throughout much of Alberta. As per its namesake it has been used to treat almost every ailment known to man. The many useful constituents it contains including D-Camphor, Manganese, Oleanolic-acid , Rosmarinic-acid and Tannins are proof that it is somewhat of a panacea. The entire plant has antibacterial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, styptic, tonic and vermifuge properties to name a few. Clinical trials have shown it to inhibit the growth of Bacillus typhi, E. coli and Mycobactacterium tuberculi and it is also showing promise in regards to herpes, certain cancers, AIDS, diabetes and other ills.

Apart from its medicinal qualities Allheal is edible. Try chopping some leaves for a different taste to a salad or having a cup of tea made with it.

It is a pretty and low maintenance plant with its purplish blue flowers and spreading greenery. It prefers moist ground in partial shade and if you need to keep its spreading ways in check just plant it in a pot, bucket or can with the bottom cut out or keep it in a larger pot all together. Bees love it and it’s a nice healthy treat for most livestock as well.
