The Celtic Zodiac and Plants – Ash and Alder

This month we look at Nion, represented by the letter N, and Fern, the letter F. Nion’s period is from Feb.

Green Ash

18th to Mar. 17th and people under this sign are deemed enchanters. Often possessing powerful imaginations, they are thought to be intuitive and very spontaneous in their actions. The Ash tree has deep roots, but they are hidden beneath the ground. This is similar to the withdrawn and somewhat introverted nature of one born under this sign due to their all consuming daydreams, while being deeply sympathetic and connected, especially to nature. Ash represents the arts, natural science and religion.

This period’s animal guardian (apart from the seal and seahorse that do not inhabit Alberta) is the seagull, of which we have quite a few species in Alberta. Here are 2 of them:

*Ring Billed Gull – distinguishing black ring around the bill, lighter yellow eyes and more frequently found around parking lots and dump sites.

Franklin’s Gull

*Franklin’s Gull – a more beautiful gull with a black head, white ring around the eye and a bright red bill.

As there seems to be a sea influence (the ocean is both spontaneous and daydreamy), it is no wonder that coral is this sign’s gemstone.

The next period from Mar. 18th to Apr. 14th is a bit confusing as F is for

Alder

Fern, but is represented by Alder. Just remember Fern is a name and not the plant in this case. Alder grows in wet places so it is not surprising it was chosen to represent Bran who was a pathway or bridge to enable people to cross the river. This is why Alder is considered a pathfinder and those under this sign are considered trailblazers. Opposite to Ash, Alders are socialites. Their extroverted nature makes them people magnets and the life of the party. Alders tend to do what they say and say what they do. Complementing Oaks, Hawthorns and Birches, this sign brings out the best in themselves and others.

Bear, fox and hawk are the guardian animals. All reside here which relates to Alder’s magnetism.

Ruby reflects this as well, (who isn’t attracted to a bright red gemstone?) and red also denotes strength.
