Locoweed, Showy (Oxytropis splendens) Alberta Native
Price range: $6.00 through $12.00 excluding_tax
Description
One of the most beautiful locoweeds, bearing pinkish, blue/purple flowers. Although locoweeds are toxic to both humans, livestock and even wild ungulates, there are many situations where they can be of benefit. Suitable for container gardening, rockeries and faerie gardens, the deep tap roots draw up nutrients not available to many other plants and their value as pollinator forage in often hot, dry locations where it is difficult to get many other plants to grow is highly valuable. Generally, wild animals and livestock that have ample,, more palatable alternative forage will leave many poisonous plants alone, but keep in mind toxic vegetation can still be accidentally ingested or resorted to when no other forage is available. Just be thoughtful where you plant them.
