Sedge, Wheat (Carex atherodes) Alberta Native
Price range: $5.00 through $11.00 excluding_tax
Description
If you want a larger sedge to fill in wetland space, this is the one! Spreading by longer rhizomes, this carex will form colonies in no time! Leaves are alternate on the lower portion of the plant and the basal leaf sheath is usually fuzzy and reddish in colour. As the common name suggests, the seed heads resemble wheat. Wetland sedges are great for water purification, wildlife food and habitat (including dragonflies!). They can help prevent bank erosion since they can tolerate some drier periods and can therefore exist on freshwater shorelines as well as shallow water in ditches, meadows and swales.
