Lavender, Munstead (Lavandula angustifolia) Non Native
Price range: $5.50 through $11.50 excluding_tax
Description
We all know this plant for its muted bluish purple tone and wonderful aromatic smell. What you may not know is that the term ‘lavender’ originally applied to just the plant, but perhaps due to its unmistakable effect on the senses, the word has become associated with everything from a colour (in varying shades no less!), to representing general cancer awareness, to becoming part of the LGBTQ culture. This all encompassing woody flowering plant originates in the Mediterranean, but as the most hardy representative of the lavender family, can be overwintered in well draining soil with some mulch in our climate. A staple ingredient in potpourris and essential oils, it can also be used in cooking and baking, much like rosemary. Like rosemary, it also has antibacterial and antifungal properties on the medicinal front hence it often being an ingredient in hair care products for dandruff and the like. It may also have a calming effect and act as a mild pain reliever (for migraines, menstrual cramps and post surgery) in the right dosage. It is loved by pollinators and so should be loved by us all!
