Apart from being a uniquely beautiful conversation piece to have in one’s yard, Ginkgos are thought to be widely medicinal. Ginkgo leaf extract may help everything from anxiety, memory, circulation, and vision problems to dizziness and PMS.
Description
At Medieval Manor Gardens we grow our Ginkgos from seed so cannot tell you if they will be male or female (it takes 10-20 years before you can sex the male and female reproductive parts), but we can tell you that some growers that sell grafted trees don’t sell exclusively all males either and they will be grafted in order to hopefully guarantee a male tree, which some people don’t mind the look of while others do. Our recommendation is if you don’t want the smell of a female tree’s fruit wafting in your face, plant your Ginkgos farther away from the main hub of your property. That way male or female they will have the space they need and if it turns out to be a girl you won’t notice so much anyway. If you are looking to produce seed you should count on getting roughly 5 seedlings to make sure there are both female and male as these are dioecious trees, meaning they only produce single sex flowers. Many other species have both male and female on the same plant and so are called monecious. Of course you can harvest your leaves from either male or female trees:)
Oh, and as a special note Ginkgos are not fond of transplanting so you should have better success planting younger specimens.
