Eastern Prickly Pear (Opuntia humifusa) Canada Native
Price range: $6.50 through $13.00 excluding_tax
Description
Similar to the plains and brittle prickly pear species found in southern and pockets of central Alberta, this one comes from seed collected in Ontario. Yellow flowers appear on the ends of the spiny green pads, followed by purplish red fruit. Both the pads and the fruit are edible if you remove the spines and the seeds. It may overwinter outdoors if conditions are right as it does not like to stay wet. Well drained, gravelly or sandy soils are best. Losses may be experienced in extremely harsh winters depending on the area, but it is one of the most resilient cacti. It can also be easily kept indoors.
