Although this plant is toxic, North American Indigenous people used the root for its analgesic, milk stimulating, rubefacient, and purgative properties. Definitely do not take without professional guidance however, as dosage needs to be calculated specifically, and being even a little off could have disastrous effects. It is a beautiful understory plant in shade areas where children and pets cannot accidentally ingest the attractive red or sometimes white berries.
